Wreckfest: Drive Hard. Die Last.
Hello ma peeps, Beximus here!
Wreckfest looks like an asylum for mentally disturbed drivers. And that’s what makes it look so damn cool!
Wreckfest is a feast!
Have you ever played Destruction Derby back in 1995? It was a videogame where you basically smashed your vehicle against other cars inside an arena, keeping your cool and fighting until you were the last car standing.
Wreckfest reminds me of those days in my PS1. I’m not entirely sure if there’s any connection between the two titles, but it resembles the old game by devs Reflections Interactive, too strongly. But that my friends, doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.
Your car is the Gladiator
You’ll be driving, or should I say fighting, in an arena (they call it Demolition Derby). Same Destruction Derby vibes. But Bugbear devs created more: races! And plenty of havoc and carnage to be unleashed. There are epic crashes and spectacular accidents that’ll make you wanna go for more. No my friends, that won’t stop you and your car from going on, unless you turn on realistic mode (yes, that’s an option).
As in all modern videogames nowadays, there’s always an upgrade system present. We all like to call it: levelling up. Sure, you’ll be able to upgrade your gladiatorial ride, to beat up all the filth and scum of the asphalt. But more on that ahead. For now, just remember that the important thing is to stay alive.
Racing is how you do it
There’s actually plenty of racing going on here. At first glance I thought, “hmmm… this is gonna be smashing pumpkins all the way” but then, after watching a few trailers my perception about the game changed. You see, the game’s been on PC for more than a year now, and only coming to consoles in August 27. Still, I haven’t seen a damn thing about it until recently, when its console announcement started to hit the news.
As you pick a ride, you’ll have plenty of racing to do. Remember about levelling up? Yep, so grab your gloves, steering wheel (yes, you can play using one of those) and hit the gas towards the racing line. Crazy racing (maybe I should say smashing) is the core attitude to have whilst playing Wreckfest. Keep wrecking your opponents out of the way, evade their attempts to crush your ride and take that piece of junk you’re driving until the checkered flag.
Pimp it baby!
As you evolve throughout chaos, your garage is your haven to pimp and tweak your ride. There’s plenty of customisation available, from paint jobs to decorations, tailpipes and airfoils to spikes and similar; you can have a bit of everything around here. It’ll all look kinda rusty and unpolished but hey, this is Wreckfest, not a beauty salon!
Just take a look at these shots and see it for yourself. You can even drive a School Bus!
A rewarding experience
The game rewards your efforts, even when you don’t win a race. That’s the same to say that it still gives you that extra incentive for you to keep going, so you never feel left behind. If in other racing titles you experienced progression staling when you don’t win or finish in the podium, worry not, Wreckfest has got you covered. The game really wants you to keep playing and progressing through its lawless races!
That is something that really caught my attention, because nowadays most videogames are huge, take plenty of hours to complete, and feeling rewarded is too time consuming. So this is a fresh and attractive approach. Sometimes we just wanna have fun, smash a few things and still feel we are getting better. Wreckfest seems to deliver this tasty juice and that deserves praise.
All in all, Wreckfest is a videogame where you can have a lot of fun driving a car. Racing or going to the arena, just remember to keep smashing at will! What matters the most is to be happy.
