Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Hello my friends, Beximus here!
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a franchise that I had the pleasure to play this year on my Nintendo Wii. I didn’t have a Nintendo Wii since yearly this year, and this is a game that I love to play with my 6yo daughter. And now, its new iteration launched on the Nintendo Switch last Friday!

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is so much fun!

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020Being a game with Nintendo’s most famous character, it was only a matter of time until this partnership between Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games would come to the Switch. And boy, am I happy! I loved playing the previous instalments on the Wii, and it seems that the core of the previous games is still there: fun, sports and some good laughs!

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a great game to play with some friends and family, because it only adds more flavour to it. The screen can be split in 2 or even 4, to accommodate the needs of all competitors. Just remember to have some space around you not to slap anyone! If you’re able to play with more people, it’s guaranteed that you’ll be having a great time (and maybe some sweats too). Above competing, in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 the priority is having fun!

There are 4 new sports available in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

Besides the traditional olympic disciplines, 4 new sports will be available for players:

SPORT CLIMBING

KARATE – KUMITE

SURFING – SHORTBOARD

SKATEBOARDING – PARK

Going old school

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020There’s another new addition to the game, and a pretty interesting one I must add: playing Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964 (yes, you read it well, it’ll be about the disciplines of that year’s Olympics) the old school way, which is the same to say, in 2D!

Knowing the role nostalgia plays in the world of videogames these days, Nintendo wants to make this game even more appealing to adults. But in all honesty, I think that the game is already great for grown ups, but is often the case that gamers consider these type of Nintendo titles more childish, so to say. To close that gap they’re using nostalgia, and playing the game’s events in classic 2D view is definitely a great bonus!
Check it out in action 🙂

There are plenty of characters to choose from

mario and sonic at the olympicsWether you prefer the likes of Sonic, Tales or Amy, or instead, go for Mario, Wario and Bowser, the roster of characters to choose from is vast. Not all characters from the worlds of Mario and Sonic are included. Dunno if Nintendo will launch more of them in a DLC pack someday, but for now, here’s the 30+ character list:

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Bowser, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Eggman, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Bowser Jr, Shadow, Silver, Metal Sonic, Vector, Toadette, Espio, Rouge, Rosalina, Zavok, Eggman Nega, Jet, Diddy Kong, Wendy, Larry, Zazz and Ludwig.

That enough? I think so 🙂 In previous instalments of the game, the cast was divided by “speed”, “skill”, “all round” and “power” types. I wonder if in Tokyo 2020 the same categories will be available and if new ones will be added.

Normal mode and Dream mode

If you don’t know what’s this all about, let me explain. When playing Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, you can compete in the traditional disciplines (Normal mode): let’s say 100m, javelin throw, gymnastics, etc. If you choose to try Dream mode, that’s another story. Nintendo puts it this way:

Dream Events make their exciting return in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020! These exciting activities take existing Olympic sports and turn up the dial by adding iconic elements from the Super Mario and Sonic series.

Meaning, you’ll be doing stuff like this:

DREAM KARATE

“Knock your opponents down to fill up the arena with panels of your color. Pick up items like POW Blocks and Chaos Emeralds to turn the tide of battle, or activate your Super Power Move to knock down anyone close to you!”

DREAM RACING

“Compete against seven other racers in this action-packed downhill race. Perform tricks to gain a speed boost on landing and gather items like Rings, Red Shells and Bananas dotted round the track to help you reach the finish first!”

DREAM SHOOTING

“Either as four separate players or in two teams of two, roam around the arena and shoot at targets to get the highest score. Aim for that giant target to gain a ton of points!”

For more info regarding the game, its modes and characters, remember to check the official Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 webpage. Hope you have a ton of fun play it! And remember, the game launched on November 8, so it was highly shadowed by Death Stranding and Need For Speed Heat (click on the links to read my articles about those two titles). Nevertheless, it totally deserves our attention 🙂
