5 reasons to be hyped about GreedFall
Hello my friends, Beximus here!
GreedFall launches September 10 and among many other spectacular things, here are 5 reasons to be hyped about this new RPG. But first…
What is GreedFall after all?
Let’s start with a bit of context. At its core, GreedFall is an RPG with some twists that we’re not so used to see. You play as an explorer, heavily influenced by a 17th century European style, seeking for a cure to the Malichor plague, that is destroying the world.
The world of GreedFall and its visual identity draw heavily from 17th century Europe. The architecture, costumes, weaponry, ambiance all take root in this period of history dominated by exploration, scientific discoveries, and booming culture in general.
Inspired by an era of scientific discoveries and exploration, you’ll embark on a journey to the island of Teer Fradee (try to say that fast and repeat it 3 times), a place full of magical-wielding places and fantastic creatures. From here on, I smell trouble. And that my friends, is where the fun begins!
The world of GreedFall is not entirely down-to-earth. You will explore an immense island seeping with magic. Its lands, inhabited by magic-wielding locales and fantastical creatures, hide countless mysteries and secrets awaiting to be discovered.
5 reasons to be hyped about GreedFall
RPGs seem like the old new these days. After trial and error, devs are coming to the conclusion that this type of genre is one of the most, if not the most, appealing to gamers. That’s because you can hardly beat a progression system as good as in an RPG.
Taking that in consideration, GreedFall followed the formula. Here’s a list of 5 things to be hyped about this soon to come title:
1. Wielding Magic
You can’t deny the importance magic plays when it comes to videogames. Controlling the elements? Gather that power whenever it suits your needs? Use it to your advantage, no matter the consequences? Hard to beat, if you ask me. Magic seems to be everywhere in the island of Teer Fradee, so get ready to use it at will!
Something that caught my eye once I saw the creatures of Teer Fradee island, was a resemblance with The Witcher 3. That is not necessarily negative, quite the contrary, as the Witcher 3 is a benchmark for any modern RPG.
2. Fantastical creatures
Did I hear creatures? Did I mention fantastical? Oh yes! It’s funny to see how 15/20 years ago if you said you loved the Fantastic genre in books or movies, people would look at you as if you said the geekiest word they’ve ever heard. That would obviously be followed by a judgemental look as if you were an 8 year old talking non-sense to an adult.
Well my friends, those days are (mostly) gone and now we can fully embrace Fantasy as a genre that is cool, getting more and more established in so many different platforms. I’m really glad that GreeFall approached its narrative and world taking in consideration the power of the Fantasy genre. Praise Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey and George Martin!
3. A 17th Century European background
French devs Spiders, known for titles as “The Technomancer” or “Bound by Flame”, immersed themselves in the 17th European Century to create GreedFall. It’s a wise choice, as this era is kinda virgin in videogames territory. Picking an age close so to the obscurantism of the Dark Ages was a clever move.
Science started to open its doors to the world, mentalities were opening and embarking on journeys of exploration was once again being part of the day-to-day life. I’m really curious to see how this unfolds as we play, but those caravels in the trailer are an impressive sign of the days ahead (I’ll be sharing that in a moment)!
4. Morality issues
Explorer or conqueror? Discovery or invasion? Questions like these arise once we arrive to the island of Teer Fradee. The island is populated by several tribes of natives and as you’ll be watching in the trailers below, it doesn’t look like a peaceful arrival at all. Is De Sardet (the main character) a colonist type or a kind explorer? I believe the choice will be yours to take (the player). Here’s where will be able to testify the true RPG aspect of the game, as our choices will determine the end result.
Will you choose a working together approach or throw yourself at the natives and their connection with the fantastical creatures to achieve what you need by any means necessary? The moral of your character will be in your hands.
5. A stunning island
Who doesn’t appreciate playing an open world videogame, and be delighted by the surrounding vistas? In my case, I can easily get lost in awe looking at what’s around me. And, if the game comes with a photomode (I really dunno at the moment) it’ll be guaranteed that I’ll be losing myself and taking countless screenshots of Teer Fradee’s creatures, flora and inhabitants. Coming once again to the 17th century, I really think this inspiration is gonna deliver fantastic results for GreedFall. September 10 is around the corner, soon we’ll all be able to judge it ourselves.
Watch it now!
I’ll leave you with a few trailers. Why not just one? Because it’s really interesting to watch them all and be aware of the nuances delivered in each trailer. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did!
